What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy primarily involves hands-on manipulation of soft tissues of the body including muscles, connective tissue, tendons, ligaments and joints for the purpose of improving health.

Massage therapy helps alleviate discomfort associated with emotional or physical stresses, muscle or tendon over-use, and many chronic or acute pain conditions. It has a therapeutic effect by acting on the muscular, nervous and circulatory systems. Whether you are looking to improve or maintain your physical or emotional function, and thereby your quality of life, then massage therapy is for you.

Registered Massage Therapists use their knowledge of anatomy and physiology when assessing and treating their clients. They combine traditional Swedish and modern massage therapy techniques with exercise and other therapies, in order to achieve optimal outcomes for their clients’ health goals.

Massage therapy is not covered by OHIP, but many healthcare benefit plans provided through insurance companies reimburse clients for treatments performed by a Registered Massage Therapist. Please consult your benefits plan policy for details. Although a doctor’s referral/prescription is not required for massage therapy, your policy may require that you obtain one prior to treatment in order to qualify for reimbursement.

ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT

On or prior to your first visit, you must complete a confidential health history form as part of your assessment (click to download form). Assessment testing and treatment cannot be performed without a completed health history form. Your personal health information will be kept strictly confidential and protected by the RMT; it cannot be released without your written consent.

Prior to your treatment, the RMT will perform a health history interview and initial assessment in order to propose a personalized treatment plan. The assessment consists of various tests designed to narrow down the source of your discomfort and provide you with a safe and effective treatment. You can change your treatment plan at any time and the RMT will reassess you at an appropriate time.

RMTs are required to obtain your consent to work on any part of your body, regardless of whether you prefer to be fully clothed or covered with sheets. Your privacy will always be respected, and you have the right to withdraw your consent for treatment at any time.  During treatment, RMTs work within your pain tolerance and you can stop or modify your treatment at any time.
